February Update

Sorry this is a bit later than usual. Things have gotten ahead of me this month! Here’s what we are working on for the rest of this month and looking into March.

It’s so rewarding to see how much these students have grown already this year! They are such hard workers and I can’t wait to see what we achieve in the second half of the year.

On another note, we welcomed a student teacher form the University of Maine into our classroom this week! She will be with us on Thursdays to learn about teaching students and to help out in the classroom. Her name is Ms. Smith and we are so happy to have her with us!

Topics for the Month of February

Reading: We are well into our unit on families. We have been talking about brothers and sisters as well as different kinds of families from around the world. This week we are reading a story called Jalapeno Bagels where we talk about recipes and family meals! We are also learning about new spelling patterns and contractions this month.

Math: In math we are currently working on Topic 9 which focuses on numbers within 1,000. We will learn how to say and write big numbers in various ways. In our next unit we will be using what we know about place value to add within 1,000.

Writing: We will continue working on writing opinion pieces. Students will be writing pieces about whether or not we should have bedtimes and what their favorite restaurants are. Soon we will be choosing our favorite books and writing reviews about them!

Science: We will be learning about animal diversity and how animals are different depending on where they live in the world. We will talk about various habitats and will be doing an animal project later this month.
