Mrs. Cole's October Update

Important Dates to Remember

October 8th- Teacher Inservice Day- No school for students

October 11th- Indigenous People’s Day-No school

The kids and I were just talking about how fast this first month has flown by! We can't believe it's already October! We have accomplished so much and have really gotten to know each other this month. Students in our classroom community have been rocking the CDC guidelines for masks and hand washing. We have already had a lot of fun learning and spending time together. We are a team and my goal is to help your student have a spectacular school year and make huge strides!

Topics for the Month of October

Reading: We have just started a unit called Nature Walk where we will be reading fantasy and non-fiction stories having to do with nature. We will also be talking about nature vocabulary, long and short vowel sounds, compound words, and homophones. We will discuss the difference between telling and question sentences. I have taken some time to get to know each student as a reader and will be providing individualized reading instruction in the classroom where they will read “just right” books and practice our sight words.

Math: We just finished a unit focused on working with equal groups (even and odd numbers). We will now move on to learn adding strategies to use when adding within 100. We may also spend some time discussing place value and talking about how knowing place value can help us when adding numbers. I will be sending home math assessments as we take them. I wanted to note that students will gain mathematical knowledge throughout the year. Please don’t fret if your student has not yet met a standard. There is still plenty of time and practice left in second grade.

Writing: We are finishing up a unit on small moment stories (personal narratives). Soon we will be starting a unit on nonfiction writing. In this unit we will conduct experiments and writing lab reports!

Science: We are wrapping up a unit about the states of matter and the properties and characteristics of materials. Next we will be discussing changes to land such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides, and much more!

*If your child is in need of a winter coat and you would like help providing one please email me within the next couple of weeks. I’d love to help with this or any other needs you might have.

As always, thank you for your support and let me know if you have any questions! The best way to contact me is through email.

Love, Mrs. Cole
