What a fun month we’ve had! The kids have been working so hard. I am already seeing lots of great progress in our second graders. There have been a lot of big jumps in reading especially. Reading is the gateway to other subject areas so please remember to read with your students daily and instill a love for reading and sharing books together. I am excited to meet with many of you next week and discuss how wonderful these students are! I have enjoyed my time with them so much.
Topics for the Month of November
Reading: In reading, we have just started our 3rd unit. This theme is called Around Town: Neighborhoods and Communities. In this unit we will explore our own community as well as discuss communities from all over. We will discuss some aspects that make up communities and neighborhoods, what makes them special, as well as related vocabulary.
Math: We are working on a unit where we learn different strategies to add within 100. In this unit we will explore the use of open number lines, place value blocks, breaking apart, and regrouping. In our next unit we will be doing all of these things except with subtraction.
Writing: We have entered our unit on informational writing. The students are currently working on their second lab report. They are testing the question: will a car roll further when rolled off of a taller or shorter ramp? Next we will be diving into writing biographies on famous people. More information to come!
Science: We are wrapping up our unit on states of matter and moving into a unit about quick changes to land.
Social Studies: This month we will learn about why we celebrate Veteran’s day and we’ll be writing letters to the Veteran’s at the Veteran’s home in Bangor. We will also be learning about some Thanksgiving history and traditions.
As always, thank you for all your support and everything you do for these students every single day. Love, Mrs Cole
